Our Story:

Mooresville Lake Norman Christian Mission has been serving South lredell County and the Lake Norman region for over 70 years. The Mission is the oldest not for profit agency in the Mooresville Area. Mooresville Christian Mission was established in 1939 by the local churches and a former Salvation Army Captain after the Salvation Army pulled out of Mooresville and it was determined that the community still needed services.

Our original mission was to provide food and clothing for the less fortunate in our community. In recent years, our focus has been on bringing families and individuals out of poverty or crisis into self sufficiency. it is no longer enough to just to help during crisis, but to prevent future crisis and focus on assisting families with the skills and resources of be self-supportive.

  • The Mission currently is serving over 4,000 families.
  • Unemployment is still in double digits.
  • Highest group of poverty is children in our area.
  • Difference between generational poverty and situational poverty: Generational poverty is two or more generations that families have lived in poverty. Situational poverty are individuals or families who have had some type of crisis that landed them in poverty. Examples are unemployment, illness, divorce, and domestic violence to name a few. These clients are often the most difficult to work with. They are extremely emotional and panicked; they require a great deal of emotional support. They tend to come to the Mission when there are no other options, and crisis is so critical, it often takes more resources than we are able to coordinate. (Such as home is already in foreclosure, rent several months behind, requiring thousands of dollars to keep them from eviction.
  • Rental issues still hard to find resources for. It is by far the most expensive service to offer, but without it, our community’s homeless population will increase. This will cost the community more to house and care for in the long run.

What makes us unique?

Programs based on community and client needs assessments.
1) Client based needs assessments are conducted are conducted at time of service or application. The findings are used to match clients to programs, either in-house and partnering agencies or organizations.
2) Community based needs assessments are also conducted throughout the community to identify needs, disparities, and service gaps.
3) The Mission uses these assessments to determine new programs and partnerships.

Not a “once or twice a year” agency.
Other crisis agencies limit financial assistance to once or twice a year. The Mission understands that it often takes many months to fight your way out of crisis. Unemployment is a prime example. The average time it takes for a displaced worker to find work is currently 18 months. In the mean time you financial obligations are still multiplying. A one-time utility bill or rent payment will seldom satisfy a crisis.

Coordinate Services
Coordinate with other agencies and churches to provide client assistance and maintain data base. Tracking assistance amounts, helping to eliminate fraud and abuse, and ensuring clients do not fall between the cracks. Coordinated services also allow the maximum use of resources.

Client Qualifications
All clients are screened and income verified. Clients requiring monetary assistance are required to develop a plan to prevent future crisis. Clients that do not show progress towards independence they are reevaluated, plans reviewed, and adjustments made. If it is shown that clients are not working towards independence, they are deemed non compliant and all services and referrals are suspended until which time they show progress.
